Unsettled Objects features installation, photography, sculpture and video works from Glasgow Museums' contemporary art collections, by established artists as well as those at an early stage in their careers. We selected the works for their social and political content they demonstrate the ways in which artists can reflect on, and raise awareness of, incidents of human rights abuse, miscarriages of justice or politically-charged historical events.

Unsettled Objects includes several new acquisitions of works by artists who are based outside the UK, such as Lothar Baumgarten and Emily Jacir. Working in partnership with The Common Guild, Glasgow Museums have bought these works through The Art Fund's Art Fund International, which provides an award of £1 million to support the development of the City's collection of international contemporary art.

The exhibition takes its title from Lothar Baumgarten's installation Unsettled Objects 1968-69. Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, which we bought in 2008 through Art Fund International. This work's combination of characteristics of 20th-century conceptual art with acute and insightful social critique sets the tone for the rest of the exhibition.
