Displayed in the exhibition THE STORM IS WHAT WE CALL PROGRESS at Arnolfini, Bristol, Ventilation Grills (PUNCHING THROUGH THE CLOUDS) by Martin Boyce consists of 4 brass ventilation grills installed at low level within a gallery space. Each has one of the following words etched into them: PUNCHING-THROUGH-THE-CLOUDS. ‘Punching through the Clouds’ is a visionary remark by influential Modernist architect Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe (1886-1969) expressing the soaring optimism of his groundbreaking skyscraper constructions, intended to evoke the ideas of punching through the gloom to a brighter future. It takes on something more sinister in Boyce’s work, particularly post-September 11. It summons up the image of the World Trade Centre smothered in smoke after two planes hit the twin towers. An established international artist, Martin Boyce studied in the Environmental Art Department and on the MFA course at Glasgow School of Art and still lives and works in Glasgow. His first solo exhibition was at the Agency, London in 1995. Others include Our Love is Like the Flowers, the Rain, the Sea and the Hours, Tramway, Glasgow in 2002; For 1959 Capital Avenue, Museum fur Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt, 2002; A Lost Cat and Alleyways, Back Gardens, Pools and parkways, Centre d'Art Contemporain, Geneva, 2007, and Out of this Sun, Into This Shadow, IKON, Birmingham, 2008. In 2009, Boyce represented Scotland at the Venice Biennale with the exhibition No Reflections, which subsequently travelled to Dundee Contemporary Arts.
