Untitled 4 2003

from The Examination Room

Catriona Grant (born 1964, Fife, Scotland, UK)

This work is from the artist's Examination Room, a series in which naked female figures occupy an abandoned medical institution. Using natural light and a long exposure, the figure appears ghostlike. She is both part of this environment and separate from it. Most of us have experienced the anxiety of waiting to be seen by a doctor. Here the viewer is on the threshold of the room and the woman unaware that she is being watched. Exposed and vulnerable, we have no idea how the woman feeling. The work explores the complex relationship between individual and institution. It highlights the necessity to submit to the most intimate of examinations, to trust that the outcome will be positive but for both to remain remote from the intrusion.
