The work of a geologist in the field resembles closely that of an artist going about the business of developing and making work; the very ground beneath one’s feet is simply that until the chance encounter with a particular rock, picked up, examined and recorded becomes an object of specific interest and the material of human curiosity and communication. Halperin’s work is a beautifully refined synthesis of a private response to the cataclysmic reality that shaped and continues to shape the world around us.
