Cylinder No 5 Black Mesh 2006

Bodil Manz (born 1943, Copenhagen, Denmark)

After studying ceramics at the School of Arts and Craft at Copenhagen, Manz continued to study in Mexico and California. She is one of Denmark's leading ceramicists and regularly exhibits internationally. She has been known as the master of eggshell porcelain for many years now. No-one else makes these fine and delicate slip-cast cylinders which have been her trademark for several years. Technically they are quite a tour-de-force as porcelain warps so easily. She uses the translucency so that you can see the inside and outside designs at the same time. There are at least three firings: biscuit firing, a very fine glaze firing and then the firing(s) of the transfers, which are all made directly from Manz's own drawings. She has been described as "the graphic artist of ceramic arts par excellence"
