The National Collecting Scheme Scotland [NCSS] is an initiative of the Scottish Arts Council that supports seven geographically dispersed and locally distinct museums and galleries in Scotland to acquire and present challenging contemporary art.
This website gives the wider public the opportunity to learn more about the initiative, its history, its museum partners, its scope and ambitions, its most recent developments and, vitally, the important array of contemporary acquisitions it has supported over eight years.
Included here, for the first time, is a searchable database of all the contemporary acquisitions that have been developed and supported through the NCSS. Hosted by the University of Glasgow's Arts Server, the database offers a single portal through which the wider public can begin to access and navigate the sheer variety of contemporary artworks held across a range of local museums and galleries in Scotland.
In Aberdeen, you will find works by artists such as Gavin Turk, Tracey Emin, Henry Coombes and Torsten Lauschmann; in Orkney, works by Douglas Gordon, Olafur Eliasson, Roger Ackling and Camilla Løw; and, in Dundee, excellent representative pieces by John Stezaker, Wolfgang Tillmans, and David Batchelor.
Key installations by Nathan Coley, Johanna Billing and Graham Fagen are to be found in Edinburgh (City Art Centre), and by Lucy Skaer in Glasgow (Hunterian Art Gallery). And in Paisley, well-selected groups of works by highly-regarded Glasgow-based artist Claire Barclay and by Mexican artist Raul Ortega respectively.
The Scottish Arts Council and the History of Art department, University of Glasgow would like to thank its museum partners and the artists, along with their galleries and representatives, for their assistance in the development of this website.
