Alan Johnston was born in Edinburgh in 1945. For over four decades he has been a central figure in the development of Scottish contemporary art, both as an artist and as Professor of Art at Edinburgh College of Art. Johnstonís work subtly reaffirms the human activity of mark-making through drawing, installation, sculpture and site-specific interventions that reveal an attention to overlooked or ignored spaces. These concerns are manifest in Orkney, a wall mounted work in four parts. Orkney has a close resonance with the Pier Arts Centreís 2007 building redevelopment and creates links between the Centreís new architecture and its founding Collection.
