Green Balance 2005

Frances Priest (born 1976, Wakefield, England, UK)

Green Balance was the outstanding work in Frances Priest’s 2005 exhibition Surface & Shape held at the Scottish Gallery. This was her second solo exhibition at this venue and followed on from ‘Line & Form’ held in 2003. In her new ceramics she explored the division and relationships between two and three dimensional space. With her emphasis on sculptural forms, her work blurs the lines between fine and applied art. In a visit to Japan in 2005 she researched the nature and use of surface pattern in Japanese woven textiles and this formed the basis of her new pieces, moving from purely line based drawing into planes of rich surface embedded into the body of the clay. Fran pushes clay to its limits – pure lines, perfect balance and subtly patterned surfaces. Her clean architectural forms invite exploration of space, line and shadow. As one piece leans towards another, tension resides in distance and contact, like the fleeting touches of a dance
