Matt Stokes received his BA (hons) in fine art from Newcastle University, where he now lives. Matt works with a variety of media and has produced videos and installations that examine how informal social movements bind people together. Stokes has exhibited at home and abroad, including galleries in Rome, Valencia, and New York. He won the Beck's Future Award in 2006. The film Long After Tonight documents a re-staged Northern Soul dance event held at St. Salvador's Church in Dundee. It draws on Dundee's history as the home of a small but strong Northern Soul scene in the 1970s, when fans travelled across the country to attend the all-nighters in the church hall, known as ‘Sally’s’. The film captures the dancers' athletic moves in the midst of the ornate religious decoration of the church, accompanied by an evocative, instrumental soundtrack.
