Wolfgang Tillmans sees himself as an artist working through the medium of photography, 'I never live through the camera. Once Iíve understood something, I can photograph it. Itís impossible to take a good picture of something when one hasnít consciously or subconsciously understood something of the nature of what one is looking at Ö itís always about having understood, or at least felt the relevance of something and wanting to convey that sense.'
