Surging 2004

Emma Woffenden (born 1962, England, UK)

Emma Woffenden studied at West Surrey College of Art and Design, 1981-84, and at the Royal College of Art, 1991-93. She has been widely acclaimed as one of Britain's most innovative and talented glass artists. Her work is in numerous public collections including the V & A and the Crafts Council. Woffenden's ambiguous forms explore the more tangible conditions of existence that are grasped as sensations, feelings and awareness. Although the thoughts and influences that underlie a work are complex, she aims to achieve 'a loaded simplicity' - a potency of form that invites interpretation, speculation and debate. With Surging, which is unmistakably phallic, there is a tremendous feeling of pulsating energy, the growth of new life. Organic in a general way and full of air-bubbles and other inclusions, it can also be read as the first root of a tiny seedling - magnified a hundred thousand times
